The Lord's Prayer in Luke - some notes

#lord'sprayer #gospelofluke #Luke #prayer #greeknewtestament #biblestudy

LUKE 11 1 - 4

A few posts back I shared a comparison of the Lord's Prayer in Matthew with the shorter version in Luke's Gospel.

Here are some further study notes on Luke's version.

and he said to them

Hotan proseukheesthe legete  When(ever) you pray say  Verb is Sunjunctive

Pater hagiastheetoo to onoma sou Father let be made holy the name of you

elthetoo hee basileia sou let come the realm of you

Note the 2 Aorist Imperatives

ton arton heemoon ton epiousion didou heemin to kath heemeran

the bread for us the for tomorrow give to/ for  us kata heemeran day by day daily

Do not fret about epiousion being a rare word just break it up into parts look up the parts in a lexicon and look at how they work in the rest of the sentence

let us have a constant supply of essential basic needs does sound better in greek !

kai aphes heemin tas hamartias heemoon  and release us the errors of us

another Aorist Imperative Aphes

kai gar autoi aphiomen panti opheilonti heemin

and for ourselves in regard to selves we release for all debts obligations owed to us

kai mee eisenegkees heema eis peirasmon

and not in carry / lead us into testing / negative experiences

So once again do not worry about minor variations or differences between the passages.

The essential message of both is so similar that the differences do not change the meaning.

The TWO Lords Prayers

#greeknewtestament #lordsprayer

Luke has a shorter version of the Lord's prayer from Matthew

Here's a chart which will hopefully make comparing the two versions easier ?

The Lord's Prayer in Koine Greek

Matthew 6 9-13 compared to Luke 11 2 – 4

Matthew 6
part of the Beatitudes
Luke 11
9

Questions

Which verb forms are Imperatives?

Note the several forms of ἀφίμι

Consider why this is translated forgive but also means release or let go

Why do you think Luke's version is shorter and uses different or less words?

Why are there both dative and genitive forms?

Think about how the Greek differs from the Latin or KJV or RSV or whatever translation you know?

I will try to convert this post into a pdf and place it on my metousia patreon soon.

Check out what I have already posted to the #patreon

Older material that has previously be posted here will also appear on the patreon but edited and improved and as pdfs that would be easier to share and store for your personal use?

Modernizing the Greek Lord's Prayer

Recently I saw a modernization of the #lordsprayer that I felt was flawed ... a bit TOO PC and not respectful of the #Greek text.

This following text #Copyright Julie Vaux is more a paraphrase than an exact translation but those who read Greek can see where I've expanded some phrases cos the greek word has several possible meanings.

I have also tried to create a version that's in line with most churches teachings and the new testament itself but with a 21st ethos?

I'm not replacing the KJV just suggesting a modern alternative that's hopefully poetic?

Please give feedback on the translation and if people like it I'll put it on prints on stationery on my Cafepress Shop.

(hey please dont rip off my copyright I have mid year health fund payments  due and if I do make a profit I can cover my other bills also and then donate to local charities )

This is a work in progress so share it only with people who read new testament or classical greek and can give feedback?

A Modern Alternative to the Lord's Prayer Based on the Greek Text

Holy Spirit of Love and Wisdom (gender free!)

You who are beyond earthly perception (change earthly to mortal ?)

Yet move within our hearts minds and souls

Let your name be holy and revered

Let your realm abide in reality and eternity

Let your divine will be manifest throughout creation

Give to us today and tomorrow our needs for body mind and soul

that we may likewise give to others

and release and forgive us from our sins and errors

as we likewise do so to others

and test us not with temptation or trial

but rescue us from evil physical and spiritual !

I consulted the Matthew and Luke versions of the Prayer for this work

HOW TO PRAY

HOW TO PRAY like THIS according to

Matthew 6: 9 - 13

So like this you pray

father ours who in the heavens (is)
make holy the name you
let come the realm of you
let become the will of you
as in the heaven and (also) upon earth

the bread for us necessary for this day give to us this day
and let go release us the debts of us
as and we release the debts of those who owe us
and not lead us into testing
but deliver us away from evil /wretchedness/being in a bad condition / place.

Note again the AORIST IMPERATIVES a verb form we don't have in ENGLISH!

We are not merely wishing or approving but asking that God's name be made holy,
that the realm of god comes, let the divine will happen,
that we have our daily essential needs, NOT luxuries,
and that if we want our debt of sin forgiven we likewise must forgive others.

This is further emphasized by verse 14.
The word used for sin is literally a falling or flying away!

Sin separates us from the Divine. Forgiveness is an action.
But not just our sins others too.
We must be concerned about others not just ourselves.

Don't bargain with God, pray for what is right and good to happen?

A short note on formatting. Since I don't know if you're reading this on a desktop monitor, a laptop, a PC Windows tablet, an Ipad or mobile. I sometimes move long clauses and sentences onto new lines. I hope that helps if you have a small screen?

There are things that help apart from prayer.

My budget and savings account are covering the food and utility bills so far but I'm between jobs at the amount so a little support would be appreciated. If you're doing better than me money wise and have found any of the info or insights into Greek in this blog helpful ... paypal tip jar top right ? It would be both good and helpful if I finally earned enuff from Adsense or Paypal to least cover my wifi broadband costs ?
