#greekalphabet #classicalgreek #greek #julievaux

THE SOUNDS OF GREEK
How Greek Was and Is Pronounced

This is part 3!

As the Greek ABC has 24 letters I will be posting this article as a series of 4 blogs over one week.

Ν ν Nu in Naxos or net

Ξ ξ Xi usually a ks sound as in Sphinx sphinks or boX boks

Ο ο Omicron O in Optic or pOt but Modern Greek the sound in bOUght or tAUt and spells u as ου!

Π π Pi in Perimeter or sPin

Ρ ρ Rho Rhinoceros or Run or thRee was more like the Scots Rolled R.

Σ ς σ Sigma Stasis or Sign and sTick
A medial double sigma as in thalassa is 2 S sounds NOT a Z.
In Modern Greek s before a Voiced Consonant becomes a Z

An expanded version of this as an ebook may be available on lulu later this year when I get confirmation submitting a pdf is possible and that unlike Amazon Lulu is unicode compliant.

Scribes and Householders

#newtestament greek #classicalgreek #biblestudy #greek

Matthew 13:51

because / by / thru this thing (understanding parables?) every scribe who has studied into (possibly within in this context) the realm of of the heavens like is a (hu)man housemaster ( in sense of owner of property sometimes translate householder not housekeeper / servant
who brings forth out of the treasur(y) his new and old (treasures)

A grammateus is generally presumed to be a "SCRIBE" or a scholar of the Jewish scriptures in the New testament but a grammateus can also be a teacher or clerk or someone who is literate and earns money by being literate.

This is 1st century ad Palestine  an era in which many home owners Jewish or greek or hellenized jew or other pagans might have barely had the equivalent of say basic primary school .

Whether your education is secular or theological like a compotent home owner you should know how and when to make use of valuables you have in store.

This is a sound principle that can be applied to things other than parables and theology to knowledge and learning in general.

Use treasure wisely!

I'm a bit off schedule due to an ear infection and the joy of installing new software over the weekend.

Check out the mid week posts on the Ionian confederacy.

Next mid week post should be on basilicas!

ERRETHEE

Matthew 5:21 includes an aorist passive from of said.
Rather than just use the aorist it uses ἐρρήθη

“You have heard that it was said (by) the ancients,”
Not merely it was or is said.

But how can ἐρρήθη be the aorist passive form of λεγω?

Originally judging from Epic and Ionic forms the verb to say speak or ask was * ἔρομαι with a stem of * ero cognate with Latin (v)erbum.

That explains partly the er but why erre. Greek uses reduplication and not just in the perfect.
Greek also uses metathesis.
Plus sometimes the present tense of a verb gets replaced by another verb.

Finally the reduplication and reversal of the stem also reduces possible confusion with similar verbs with an ree stem in the aorist like rhiptoo and p(h)eoo. And r(h)gnumi.

Well those are some of the reasons. Its just proof of Heraclitus' famous saying:
Panta rheei Everything flows! Maybe?
